MAGS 230
The Mags 230 has a length of 233 km and 5780 metres of positive altitude difference. It starts, with its back to the sea, from the magnificent Città Sant’Angelo, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, and continues through the rolling hills towards Gran Sasso. It passes through ancient villages, spectacular valleys, beech forests, unspoilt plateaus and colourful hills. You can discover art, history and traditions in a single bike trip, all on your own. The type of terrain, which can always be tackled by walking, allows us to recommend Gravel Bikes in addition to Mountain Bikes.
DISCOVER
From the center of the hamlet of Città Sant’Angelo we leave for Bisenti (Km 35), on cart tracks and secondary roads. From here it begins the first important climb that leads to the CAI “Faiani” Refuge, at the foot of Monte Camicia. From here a descent on asphalt leads to the village of Castelli, then climbs up to the sources of Ruzzo and descends towards the village of Isola del Gran Sasso (Km 72 point Mags). The route crosses the historic center of Tossicia, then the town of Montorio al Vomano. From here, take the Statale 80 and after about 30 km you’ll arrive at Locanda del Cervo (Km 108, Mags point). Back on the saddle, you pass the inhabited center of Ortolano and at km 123 you turn left onto the cart track that leads to the church of San Vincenzo. Then you arrive at the descent of the Vasto Valley on a cart track that, at about km 140, leads to the entrance of “grotta a Male”. Then you reach Fonte Cerreto (Km 147 point Mags), seat of the Gran Sasso cableway, continue on the Statale 17 bis, until you turn right at km 158 which will lead to the Campo Imperatore plain. Once you have crossed the plain, passing through Vallestrina, you’ll reach the Voltigno plateau (190 km Mags point). Once you have left, you go down towards Montebello di Bertona and cross the natural reserve of Lake Penne (Km 205 point Mags). Leaving Penne, the destination is close: in a few kilometers you’ll return to the starting point, Città Sant’Angelo.
